Graduated from the Department of Fine Arts and the MFA Program in Media Arts at the School of Arts and Technology, Taipei National University of the Arts.
Hou-Cheng Lin is a visual artist, moving image creator, and film producer. His practice spans photography, video, installation, and narrative filmmaking. Centering on the interplay of space, memory, time, and the body, his work explores the tension between alienation and connection, between gaze and presence. Through poetic yet documentary visual language—often employing long exposure, composed framing, and a meditative use of light and rhythm—he constructs a viewing experience suspended between reality and illusion.
Lin’s artistic inquiry revolves around themes of solitude and memory. By quietly observing spaces and figures, he reveals the emotional textures and psychological landscapes embedded in the everyday. His imagery often features theatrical staging and extended temporal exposure, evoking the weight of time and the traces of existence, cultivating a sense of ambiguity between the visible and the felt.
His cinematographic work for the television film Spring of Dawn (曉之春) was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Golden Bell Awards. He has also contributed to numerous film and video productions as director of photography. Lin’s work has been selected for acquisition by Taiwan’s National Youth Collection Program and Art Bank Taiwan, affirming its cultural and artistic significance. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, with venues ranging from major art museums to independent spaces and rural revitalization projects, consistently engaging the intersection of image and social context.
Influenced by philosophy and literature, Lin considers image-making a means of extending one’s state of being. Through acts of seeing, his work seeks to reconfigure our perception of reality and emotional memory. He continues to develop experimental, cross-disciplinary projects that examine the fluid interplay between personal experience and collective memory.
